My love for libraries began when I was just five years old when my parents signed me up for my first library card. Walking into a library for the first time felt magical. The living archives of knowledge buzzing with the energy of all the people who visit, learn, and create within their walls.
I live just a few blocks from the Selby Library and walk past it nearly daily. The building always caught my eye, with its striking domed roof, unusual, eye-like windows, and the way light seemed to pour through every corner. I often wondered about the story behind its design, and finally, I decided to find out.
The library, designed by architect Eugene Aubry, was opened in 1998. It’s far from your typical library. Its architecture is modern yet welcoming, with bold elements like its domed roof, which fills the interior with natural light, and the playful, eye-shaped windows that give the façade its unique character. These windows don’t just let in light—they connect the library to the bustling streets of downtown Sarasota, reflecting the city's vibrant energy.
Aubry’s design blends practicality with artistry, making the library feel more like a public gallery than a quiet repository for books. Programmable daylighting creates a dynamic atmosphere that changes with the time of day. At the same time, the building’s innovative thermal ice storage HVAC system reflects its eco-conscious roots—well ahead of when it was built. The dome is at the heart of the library, home to "Just Browsing," a kinetic sculpture by artist Tim Prentice. The installation features gently shifting banners that mimic clouds drifting under the dome, creating a calm and meditative vibe that perfectly complements the space.
Selby Library is more than just a place for books—it’s one of the most exciting spots to hang out in downtown Sarasota. Its “Creation Station” maker space is a hub of creativity, offering everything from 3D printers and Cricut machines to virtual reality gear and sewing equipment. Whether you’re a tech enthusiast or someone who loves crafting, there’s something here to spark your imagination.
For music lovers, the Sarasota Music Archive is a hidden gem. Tucked within the library, it holds hundreds of thousands of recordings, sheet music, and memorabilia—a treasure trove for anyone passionate about music history. Beyond that, the library hosts various programs and events, from author talks and book clubs to workshops and children’s story hours. It’s common to see people of all ages exploring, learning, and connecting with others.
The library also features spaces designed to entice you to stay. Its cozy reading nooks are perfect for curling up with a good book, while the bright, open workspaces invite productivity, whether you’re studying, working remotely, or brainstorming your next project. Selby also boasts well-equipped meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi, and a small bookstore for those who want to take a piece of the library home.
And if you’re visiting with kids, Selby has a section for young readers that feels like stepping into a storybook. The entrance to the children’s area is enchanting, designed like an aquarium arch that instantly catches your eye. Brightly colored and whimsical, it feels like you’re walking underwater, with playful details setting the tone for adventure. Beyond the entrance, the space opens into a vibrant world of books and interactive elements perfect for sparking a child’s imagination. It’s the place that makes reading feel like a journey and keeps little ones coming back for more.
